Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute presents visiting scholar seminar series

A visiting scholar seminar series co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute and Virginia Tech academic departments brings to the New River and Roanoke Valleys biomedical research experts on topics ranging from basic cell biology to how dehydration impacts mood.
There will be nine speakers in the series, with all sessions webcast to allow for attending from afar, and after the date.
Upcoming speakers are:
Jean-Leon Chong, postdoctoral fellow at Ohio State University, who will speak on "Rethinking Rb/E2F's Function in Cell Cycle" on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 9 a.m. in Life Sciences Building I, room 101 (webcast). Chong is with the Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics in the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State. The talk is co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science.
Eric G. Krause, research assistant professor of psychiatry in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, speaking on "The Impact of States of Dehydration on Stress Responding and Mood" on Monday, Sept. 20, at 9 a.m. in Life Sciences I, room 101 (webcast). The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences.
Gabi Gerlitz, postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Metabolism with the National Cancer Institute, speaking on "The Role of Chromatin Structure in Cell Migration and DNA Damage Response" on Thursday, Sept. 23, at 9 a.m. in Life Sciences Building I, room 101 (webcast). The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences.
Konark Mukherjee, postdoctoral fellow in biology at Brandeis University, speaking on "From a Synaptic Scaffold to a Signaling Molecule: The Role of CASK" on Monday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m. in Life Sciences I, room 101 (webcast).
Kazuhito Toyooka, research assistant in the Department of Pediatrics and Department of Medical Genetics at the University of California, San Francisco, presenting on "Dissecting the Functions of 14-3-3 Protein Family in Brain Development and Disease" on Friday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. in Life Sciences I, room 101 (webcast). The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences.
William J. Tyler, assistant professor in the College of Science at Arizona State University, speaking on "Ultrasonic Neuromodulation: The Future of Therapeutic Neurostimulation and Brain-Machine Interfaces" on Monday, Oct. 18, at the Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Laboratory building in the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center at a time to be determined in (webcast). The talk is co-sponsored by the Virginia Tech School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences in the College of Engineering. The time will be posted in the Virginia Tech Calendar of Events.

McDonald, senior research fellow with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who spoke on "A Mixed Blessing: Mechanism of Rotavirus Gene Reassortment"; Deborah F. Kelly, postdoctoral fellow with Harvard Medical School, speaking on "3D Imaging of Cellular Machinery Using Cryo-Electron Microscopy"; Warren K. Bickel, professor of psychiatry and health behavior at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, speaking on "Excessive Discounting of the Future as a Trans-Disease Process"; and Tao P. Zhong, assistant professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, who spoke on "Regulation of Cardiovascular Development in Zebrafish."
