Photos: Solitude Renovation

Work to restore Solitude, one of the oldest buildings on Virginia Tech's campus, began in the summer of 2010 and wrapped up in January of 2011. Solitude has served as the location of the infirmary, a home to Virginia Tech faculty and staff, and the offices of the Hokie Club. In the mid-1970s, academic programs moved into the house. Solitude was most recently occupied by Appalachian Studies, which returned to the space after the renovation.

The renovation project was largely funded by a gift from the Mary Morton Foundation of Richmond, Va.

Many issues were addressed during the renovation. The outside work included repairing the roof, repairing the wood siding, and addressing drainage issues. Inside, the house was gutted and re-plastered. Historic trim and finishes were removed for restoration and reinstalled.
