Perry D. Martin of Newport, Va., assistant director of Virginia Tech’s Service-Learning Center, was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine to serve on the Governor's Commission on National and Community Service.

The commission was established by executive order in May 2006 in compliance with the National Communities Trust Act of 1993. Under the provisions of the act, the state is eligible to receive grant funding from AmeriCorps, a national volunteer-based service program. The commission is advises Governor Kaine and his cabinet secretaries on matters related to the promotion and development of national service in Virginia.

“I am pleased to be recognized on the state level for my experience related to community involvement and leadership,” Martin said upon learning of his appointment. “I’m looking forward to representing the perspective of higher education institutions as we work to instill values of community and national service among our students, staff, and faculty.”

Martin was honored by the commission twice in past years, first in 2001 when the Service-Learning Center’s Hometown Industries program (formerly called Appal Corps) that he founded was given the outstanding group volunteer effort award in Virginia. In 2005, Martin was the commission’s outstanding individual volunteer in the Commonwealth of Virginia for his work with the Tekoa Residential Treatment Facility.

Martin earned his bachelor of arts in communication studies and his master of arts in education from Virginia Tech. Apart from his role on the commission, Martin has been an important contributor to numerous outreach and service endeavors at and between Virginia Tech and the surrounding communities.
