BLACKSBURG, Va., October 2, 2009 -- Virginia Tech's Department of Religion and Culture is sponsoring Bart Ehrman, the James A. Gray Distinguished Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as the 2009 Hammond Lecturer.

Ehrman will deliver his address, entitled "Is the New Testament Forged? The Real-life Authors of the Christian Scriptures,"
on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. in 2150 Torgersen. The public is invited. A reception and book signing will follow.

Ehrman has published extensively in the fields of New Testament and Early Christianity, having written or edited 21 books, numerous scholarly articles, and dozens of book reviews.

Among his most recent books are a Greek-English edition of the Apostolic Fathers for the Loeb Classical Library (Harvard University Press), an assessment of the newly discovered Gospel of Judas (Oxford University Press), and two New York Times Bestsellers: God's Problem (an assessment of the biblical views of suffering) and Misquoting Jesus (an overview of the changes found in the surviving copies of the New Testament and of the scribes who produced them). Free parking is available around the Drillfield with a visitor's pass from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. No pass is necessary on the Drillfield after 8 p.m. or on weekends. A visitor's pass may be obtained Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Visitor Information Center, located on Southgate Drive.
