BLACKSBURG, Va., August 26, 2009 -- The Virginia Tech Alumni Association, which has over 130 chapters, has awarded over $184,000 in scholarships to nearly 160 Virginia Tech first-year students for the 2009-10 academic year.
Chapters raise funds by hosting golf tournaments, pig roasts, crab feasts, and various other events.
Awards are presented to students at their high school graduation ceremony or local send-off picnics. This years total scholarships exceed the $175,000 previously awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
Chapters of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association provide a communication outlet between alumni and the university. Alumni chapter volunteers work to build strong relationships among alumni, students, parents, and the community as a whole.
