BLACKSBURG, Va., August 6, 2009 -- Virginia Tech has been designated one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).

Best Workplaces for Commuters, a voluntary partnership program designed to cut traffic congestion and traffic-related air pollution, recognizes employers that provide environmentally friendly commuter benefits to employees. According to the partnership, offering these commuter benefits identifies Virginia Tech as an organization committed to reducing pollution, commuting costs, traffic congestion, and employee stress that can be caused by single-occupant vehicle commuting.

Virginia Tech offers an array of benefits that help employees pursue environmentally friendly and cost-effective commuting strategies. These programs include the Commuter Alternatives Program which includes Bike, Bus, and Walk, and carpooling. In addition, vanpooling and public transportation options are available and encouraged.

“We are proud to make this commitment to our employees and to the environment,” said Debby Freed, Alternative Transportation manager.

The results of Virginia Tech’s efforts will be reflected in the environment and in cost savings. Virginia Tech’s alternative transportation programs reduce commuting costs not only for those using alternate forms of transportation, but also for all commuters by taking cars off the road and reducing traffic and parking congestion.
