Implementation of physical address change suspended

Subject: Physical Addresses for Campus Buildings

On July 28, 2011, Virginia Tech announced the use of new physical addresses for all campus buildings with the intent to enhance 911 response capabilities, improve delivery information for external vendors, and facilitate GPS navigation for the campus community and visitors (http://www.vtnews.vt.edu/articles/2011/07/072811-tcs-physicaladdress.html). All buildings have been assigned a street number and street name. The new addressing system complies with standard U.S. Postal Service practice.

We announced an implementation date of August 1, 2011 for the project. Unfortunately, we immediately realized significant challenges with the implementation, including system inconsistencies, and are suspending the use of the new physical addresses at this time. The only exception is residential mail which is fully prepared to implement the new physical addresses at the beginning of the fall semester (http://www.mailservices.vt.edu/residential.htm#zip).

At this time, everyone is asked not to make any further changes to their addressing format. If you have already changed your address, please take no action and await further instruction.

As mentioned previously, the project is very important for university safety and security, therefore, we will develop a taskforce with broad university representation to address the problems that arose from the initial implementation, as well as anticipate and mitigate potential obstacles with internal systems when we resume full implementation.

If you would like to provide feedback to the taskforce, or if you or someone from your department would like to serve on the taskforce, please send us an email to vpas@vt.edu for consideration.
