Volunteers needed for Dining Services Garden at Kentland Farm

From: Dining Services

The Dining Services Garden at Kentland Farm, which provides a wide range of organically grown produce for the Farms & Fields Project in Owens Food Court and other dining venues at Virginia Tech, is looking for volunteers for the fall semester.

Volunteering at the garden offers experience in all aspects of the production process, from planting and harvesting crops to various activities necessary for farm maintenance. Everything produced by the garden goes to Virginia Tech Dining Services, giving volunteers a chance to be directly involved in and learn more about locally grown and organically produced foods and sustainable farming, as well as develop awareness of the importance of where and how their food is produced.

The garden was conceived in 2009 as a small herb plot, and has grown into more than two acres of organic crops. The number and nature of projects vary based on the season, but most volunteers are needed during the fall semester. Volunteers are encouraged to work in three-hour segments, but the garden welcomes all members of the Virginia Tech community regardless of how much time and help they can offer. No volunteer transportation program is currently available, but parking is available and carpooling is encouraged.

For more information or to get involved, individuals should visit the garden’s Facebook page or the Farms & Fields blog. Those interested in group volunteer work should email Elena Dulys-Nusbaum to schedule special group days and tours.
