2010 University Summer Sessions Faculty Grant Program Announced

The Provost Office Summer Sessions Grant Program announces the opening of its grant application process to encourage faculty in developing and offering new courses or courses not offered in recent summer terms for the 2010 Summer Sessions terms. Established in 2006, the grant program was created as an incentive program to promote summer sessions as an integral component of a student's learning, discovery, and engagement experience.

For the purposes of the grant, a "new course" is defined as:

  1. any course that has not been offered in the last four summer sessions; or
  2. any course that has been taught previously in summer, but reformatted with a new instructional delivery method (e.g., formatting a face-to-face course for an online population).

For the 2009-2010 award period, a total of $50,000 is available and faculty may seek grants ranging up to $10,000. Consideration will be given to faculty for developing proposals to support the following areas:

• High Enrollment Courses:
The ideal course will be online, expected to enroll 200 or more students, and provides qualified graduate students opportunities to work with teaching faculty to teach a course.

• Curriculum for Liberal Education:
The ideal course will be online, provides qualified graduate students opportunities to work with teaching faculty to teach a course, supports cross-college initiatives, and supports courses in Area 4.

• First Year Experience:
The ideal course will be offered in Summer Session II 2010 to incoming first year students, must be consistent with the University's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), be offered on campus or through a blended format, and incorporate the Common Book.

• Global Issues:
The ideal course supports University Studies students' exploration and entrance into degree programs, includes cross-disciplinary approaches to problem solving, with an expectation of enrolling 50 or more students. Preference will be given to courses offered in Summer Session II 2010.

Director of University Summer Sessions, Michael Herndon, is very enthusiastic about the upcoming award period and predicts an especially fresh and relevant pool of grant applications. "Going into the fourth year of the summer grant program, we are confident that the initiative will continue to provide exciting new courses to help boost summer enrollment".
