Alcohol-free late night activities planned for Virginia Tech students

From: University Unions and Student Activities

Friday, October 2 marks the first of a series of alcohol-free late night activities planned for this academic year at Virginia Tech (VT). “Party in the J” is a DJ dance party in Johnston Student Center, Friday, October 2, 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The event is free and open to all Virginia Tech students. It is sponsored by the College Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center (CAAPC), the Virginia Tech Union (VTU) Alternative Sounds, Under My Own Influence, Cranwell International Center, and the Residence Hall Federation (RHF).

“The idea came about because there are not enough late night activities on campus that don’t involve alcohol,” said Steve Clarke, director of the CAAPC. “It has been a collaborative effort of groups that are interested in promoting a healthy alternative for students.” Clarke said “Party in the J” is just the first of 10 planned alcohol-free late night events this academic year, all taking place in Johnston Student Center. The schedule for the Fall 2009 semester includes:

  • Friday, October 2: DJ dance party
  • Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31: haunted house, costume contest, and dance party
  • Friday, November 6: acoustic music
  • Friday, December 4: acoustic music

Details about these events will be posted on Facebook under "Sober is Sexy."

Late night activities are not new to Johnston Student Center, which in the past has hosted Diwali festivals, Chinese New Year celebrations, and dance parties. However, this is the first series of events in the facility, according to Spencer Joslin, coordinator of Johnston Student Center operations. “We are looking forward to the interesting mix of dance parties, acoustic music, spoken word performances, and games that are planned for this academic year,” said Joslin. Johnston Student Center is a part of University Unions & Student Activities, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs.
