Campus Notice
Delayed opening of university offices on April 16
From: University Relations
University offices will open at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 16 to accommodate The Run in Remembrance. As of this writing, more than 2,000 participants are expected for the special remembrance event. The Run in Remembrance, a 3.2 mile run or walk, honors the 32 Hokies killed on April 16, 2007.
'I am thrilled to see so many people showing their respects. But with more than 2,000 people participating in the event and filling campus streets with runners and pedestrians right at the beginning of the this very special day of remembrance, we may see a significant safety hazard for drivers and runners,' said Provost Mark McNamee.
The run, which begins at 8 a.m., will cause closure of Alumni Mall, portions of Duck Pond Drive, portions of West Campus Drive, Grove Lane, and portions of parking lots. The Drillfield will be closed to traffic all day April 16 beginning 5:30 p.m. April 15.
Emergency personnel should report at normal times. University delayed opening procedures are in effect for leave reporting. If circumstances unique to an office or department warrant opening, department heads and supervisors should make independent decisions for staffing based on your understanding of the required workload for that day. Employees who would normally work and will be required to work from 8-10 a.m. will be eligible for compensated authorized closing leave.
