2009 Day of Remembrance traffic, parking, and transit information updated April 15

On Thursday, April 16, the Virginia Tech Day of Remembrance will be held in honor of those lost in 2007.

As a result of the planned events and the large number of anticipated attendees, on-campus traffic and parking will be affected. Those planning to attend the scheduled events are strongly encouraged to carpool, as parking will be very limited and Blacksburg Transit will be running on break service. Please take advantage of alternative modes of transportation.

Traffic

Drillfield Drive (north and south) will be closed to public traffic beginning April 15 at 5:30 p.m. and will remain closed throughout April 16.

The 3.2 mile Run in Remembrance route will affect several locations on campus roadways as well as parking lots. The details of the affected campus parking and traffic are listed below.

  • Added April 15: The Blacksburg Police Department will be closing the right southbound lane of Main Street from Turner Street to College Avenue tomorrow morning, Thursday, April 16, from approximately 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.
  • West Campus Drive will be closed to thru traffic from 8 a.m. until approximately 10 a.m. at the conclusion of the race -- the closure will be from the entrance of the Davidson parking lot to the entrance of Ag Quad Lane.
  • The Smithfield Parking Lot will close beginning at 7a.m. on April 16 and will reopen when the run is complete at approximately 10 a.m.
  • The Litton Reaves Extension Lot will close at 7a.m. and reopen at the end of the run at approximately 10 a.m.
  • There will be no parking allowed on the University Mall beginning midnight of April 15.

The following roads will be closed beginning 7a.m. on April 16 as they are a section of the 3.2 mile run but will reopen to normal traffic flow at the completion of the race at approximately 10 a.m.:

  • Smithfield Road (the entrance to Smithfield from Duck Pond Dr. and the junction with Plantation Rd. at the horse barns will be blocked)
  • Grove Lane
  • Alumni Mall (inbound lane only, however faculty and staff will still have access to the Shultz lot)
  • Duck Pond Drive (from Washington Street to Oak Lane)
  • West Campus Drive (as stated above) will be closed to thru traffic between the entrance of the Davidson parking lot to the entrance of Ag Quad Lane

Parking

  • Public parking for all events will be in the large commuter lots between Prices Fork Road and Perry Street.
  • Parking for handicapped/accessible customers will be located on the south side of the Drillfield.
  • The Rec Fields and Health and Safety Lots (off Tech Center Drive), will be available for media vehicles
  • No visitor parking permits will be required on April 16
  • Price Hall Lot will be closed to public parking beginning at midnight of April 15 and will remain closed through the day April 16.
