Harassment prevention at Virginia Tech

All members of the Virginia Tech community should know that sexual harassment and discriminatory harassment are illegal and violate Virginia Tech policy.

If you have concerns or questions about possible harassment, don't wait---tell the person that their behavior is a problem, or get help from your supervisor, administrator, or department head. You may also contact any of the resources below.

If you are concerned about physical safety, call the police.

Examples of possible discriminatory harassment

  • Mistreating someone due to color, sex, race, religion, or sexual orientation
  • Making fun of a person's disability
  • Unwelcome jokes
  • Putting people down because they are older, are pregnant, or come from other countries
  • Urging religious beliefs on someone who finds it unwelcome

Examples of possible sexual harassment if unwelcome, repeated or severe

  • Flirting
  • Unwanted touching
  • Sexually suggestive comments, messages, images, posters, or pictures
  • Comments about a person's clothing, body, or personal appearance
  • Sexual advances or propositions
  • Repeated requests for dates
  • Pressure for sexual activity
  • Emails, phone calls, instant messages, or other repeated, unwelcome attempts at communication
