Database helps locate research funding

Researchers at Virginia Tech now have access to an online database to search for funding from private foundations.

The Foundation Center, based in New York, has long maintained the most extensive compilation of information about private foundations, published in hard copy form as The Foundation Directory. Recently, it opened its web-based service, the Foundation Directory Online, to institutional subscriptions, and Virginia Tech is among the first major research universities to obtain a membership.

Any member of the Virginia Tech community using a university-based computer can access the database simply by logging on. The site includes a tutorial with instructions on how to search for information about individual foundations or for a list of awards that conform to selected research themes.

The site also lists a calendar for workshops conducted by the Foundation Center on using the databases.

Use of the Foundation Directory Online will be covered in future Finding Funding workshops for the Virginia Tech faculty, offered through the Faculty Development Institute. The subscription to the database is being paid for by the Office of the Vice President for Research, the University Libraries, and the Virginia Tech Foundation.

Questions may be directed to Robert Porter in the Research Division.
