Campus Notice
Campus snow and ice traffic emergency procedures
From: Transportation and Campus Services
Virginia Tech is in the time of year when snow and icy roads may become an issue.
Please take a few moments to review the snow and ice traffic emergency procedures for the Blacksburg campus.
The roadways listed below are designated Emergency Snow Routes that must remain clear and open for emergency vehicle use. This designation (Emergency Snow Routes) goes into effect when road conditions deteriorate to the point where road travel is difficult generally when the road is significantly iced or approximately 3-4 inches of snow has fallen. When these conditions exist all parallel parked vehicles must be removed from the following four roadways or be towed at owner's expense:
- Washington Street: between Kent Street and Duck Pond Drive
- Kent Street: between Washington Street and Drillfield Drive
- South Drillfield Drive: between Kent Street and West Campus Drive (both sides of the road)
- Spring Road: between Washington Street and Southgate Drive.
A map of the Blacksburg campus is posted at the Transportation and Parking website.
Resident Students: Remember that by midnight on the day the Snow and Ice Traffic Emergency is declared, all resident students must have their vehicles parked in the two resident lots (Duck Pond Road Resident Lot (the Cage) and Stadium Lot). Resident student vehicles that are parked outside of these areas are subject to ticketing and towing. Resident student vehicles must remain parked in the resident lots until the snow emergency has been lifted.
All Faculty, Staff and Students: It is very helpful to have as many vehicles as possible out of all our lots when we are plowing snow. This will allow us to make the lots as safe and convenient as possible during snow and ice conditions. Vehicles should not be abandoned in a normal lane of traffic when road conditions become difficult. Vehicles abandoned in roadways or in hazardous locations in parking lots will be towed at the owner's expense.
Blacksburg Transit :
Blacksburg Transit now operates with Emergency Snow Routes on the following routes:
- Toms Creek (A & B)
- Harding Avenue
- Main Street (north and south bound)
- CRC/Hospital
The Hethwood, University Mall Shuttle, Patrick Henry, Hokie Express, and Two Town Trolley - Blacksburg routes maintain their normal routes during snow and ice events.
Blacksburg Transit decides when they need to use their Emergency Snow Routes and will post this information on the bus's destination sign, the Blacksburg Transit website, and the Blacksburg Alert Service.
Emergency Snow Routes continue to operate until all routes and major bus stops have been cleared and inspected. Deviations from the normal routes require the closure of several stops along the normal route. Please consult the route maps to find out if these deviations and closures affect your stop.
For more information about this procedure, contact Blacksburg Transit at 961-1185.
The University Hotline can also be used outside of normal business hours at 231-6668.
If you have any questions, please call Parking Services at 231-3200 or Physical Plant Operations at 231-4300.
