Mediation services available

The Office for Equity and Inclusion (OEI) offers mediation and other conflict resolution services to members of the Virginia Tech community. These services include a range of strategies such as mediation for individuals and groups. Workshops on managing conflict are available through University Organizational and Professional Development (www.uopd.vt.edu) and presentations and workshops can be scheduled directly with departments or campus organizations. Individual skill building opportunities are also now available from OEI.

Conflicts are an inevitable part of life. When not properly addressed, conflict can raise anxiety, lower morale, and bring about disengagement from work and colleagues. Unresolved conflict can cause disruptions on a small scale, or even confound an entire institution. If handled well, however, institutions can use the creative tension arising from conflicts to develop comprehensive solutions and build strengthened relationships between colleagues.

The Office for Equity and Inclusion's conflict resolution program coordinates a pool of trained individuals who provide services, either on campus or at other Virginia Tech sites, to those who need help in resolving issues and disputes between members of the university community. Students, staff, and faculty members are encouraged to use this valuable resource as the university continues to promote, sustain, and advance working and learning environments based on principles of civility, respect, and community.

Information about the services available through the program is available on the Office for Equity and Inclusion website. For more information, contact Dale Robinson, Conflict Resolution Program Manager, at 540/231-1824.
