Corps alumna 2nd Lt. Rebecca McAfee named Independence Bowl Hokie Hero
BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumna 2nd Lt. Rebecca McAfee, U.S. Army, who earned a degree in economics from the College of Science and a minor in leadership studies from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Rice Center for Leader Development in 2014 was selected as the Hokie Hero for the Independence Bowl where Virginia Tech played the University of Tulsa.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Hokie Hero program started in 2006 by IMG College, honors Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets alumni who are currently deployed. Recipients of this honor are highlighted by Jon Laaser and Mike Burnop during the radio broadcast of Virginia Tech football games, on the Corps of Cadets website and in the Corps Review magazine.
McAfee is a Field Artillery officer assigned to 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Polk, Louisiana. She is currently deployed in Eastern Afghanistan as an advisor in support of Operation Resolute Support.
McAfee is a 2014 graduate of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and served as the Hotel Company commander during her senior year.
She says she sends her regards to her family and friends, to her buddies from Training Company 3-3 back home in the states, to the cadre of Virginia Tech’s Army ROTC battalion for their outstanding mentorship and guidance, and finally to all U.S. service members stationed across the world for their hard work and sacrifices.
