"It’s music of pure inspiration," said the Kandinsky Trio’s Alan Weinstein, in reference to the group's upcoming chamber music performance at Virginia Tech.

The Kandinsky Trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2,  in the Squires Recital Salon as a part of the Music on Mondays series presented by the School of Performing Arts.

The Kandinsky Trio is made up of Elizabeth Bachelder, piano; Benedict Goodfriend, violin; and Weinstein, a Virginia Tech music faculty member, cello. One the most successful chamber music groups in the U.S., the trio has performed for over 27 seasons, and over a thousand concerts, including notable appearances in New York at the Miller Theater and Merkin Hall as well as in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center. They have performed extensively in the U.S., Europe, and Canada. Closer to home, they are artists-in-residence at Roanoke College.

The program, entitled "Contentment and Tragedy," contrasts themes between two compositions. Mozart’s G Major Trio, K. 496, showcases a light and airy atmosphere, and embodies the positivity and idealism of the Age of Enlightenment. In contrast, Smetana's Trio in G Minor, Op. 15 is a haunting and dark piece which deals with ideas of death and devastation. Two recently commissioned works, "Burst" by Dan Cavanagh and "Searching for Razbliuto" by Robert Pannell, round out the program.

"We haven’t played the Smetana piece in about 10 years; it’s coming out of retirement," Weinstein said about the featured performance.

Tickets are $15 general, $12 senior, and $7 student, and may be purchased through the Squires ticket office, or by calling 540-231-5615. Tickets will also be available at the box office beginning one hour prior to the performance.
