Opportunity to explore diverse academic paths at Majors Fair
With more than 100 different majors at Virginia Tech, including some of the newest like neuroscience, criminology, and water: resources, policy, and management, deciding what area to study can be a difficult decision for students. The Majors Fair, hosted by Undergraduate Advising and Student Government Association (SGA), can help students learn more about the university’s program to find the best fit or even to explore a second major.
The fair, hosted in Squires Student Center’s Commonwealth Ballroom from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30, will include informational tables for over 60 majors from various departments and colleges.
“This event gives [students] a one-stop-shop where they can see all kinds of different options that are available to them,” explained Kimberly Smith, director of Undergraduate Advising and University Studies. “If they are thinking about going into one major but are unsure, or if they are thinking about a couple of different majors, then they can speak with representatives and learn what those majors are really about. It equips students with more information.”
Much of the traffic will be first-year students, Smith said, but all students are welcome and urged to attend. Last year, attendance increased by over 30 percent, and this year, the hope is that attendance will rise again.
“My goal is to have 1,500 students come to the Majors Fair this year,” said Hannah Thomas, SGA director of academic affairs. “I am excited for the partnership between the SGA and Undergraduate Advising.”
In order to educate the students of what each major has to offer, there will be displays, brochures, pamphlets, and a range of other giveaways at each table.
“It is hard to research and know all the opportunities, majors-wise, that our university has,” Thomas said. “Finding the perfect major can be a stressful time. The Majors Fair can make it easier for students. We want to help them, and this event does exactly that.”
“I would tell students to take their time and explore every major,” Thomas continued. “We have so many great options here at Virginia Tech and you can truly find what is right for you; you just have to look.”
