Spring Mainstage Theatre season opens with 'Three Days of Rain'
What do we really know about our parents? The disparity between what we think we know of their lives and the mysteries that we can never penetrate is explored in the School of Performing Arts’ Mainstage Theatre production of “Three Days of Rain.”
The play opens Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Student Center Studio Theatre, with performances on Feb. 25-28 at 7:30 p.m., March 1 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., March 2 at 2 p.m., and March 4-5 at 7:30 p.m.
“How you understand yourself is very much about how you understand your relationship with your parents. We discover in adulthood that we never really knew our parents -- we don’t know half of their lives -- and that’s a shocker,” said director and theatre faculty member Bob Leonard.
“Three Days of Rain” is a smart and evocative play that requires an outstanding group of actors to capture the struggles that these well-developed characters face.
“We have a great team doing this play. It’s a wonderfully challenging acting piece that is totally appropriate for the ages of the actors involved,” said Leonard.
The main subjects of the play are legendary architects and their adult children. Set in New York City during the 1960s and 1990s, the play examines east coast establishment privilege, the torments of creative souls, and the inescapable burdens of the past.
Written by Richard Greenberg and originally produced in New York City by the Manhattan Theatre Club in 1997, “Three Days of Rain” was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It opened on Broadway in 2006 starring Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, and Bradley Cooper. Greenberg is a Tony Award winning playwright, receiving the honor in 2003 for “Take Me Out.”
Tickets are $10 general, $8 senior and student, and may be purchased through the Student Centers and Activities Ticket Office on the first floor of Squires Student Center, or by calling 540-231-5615. Tickets will also be available at the box office beginning one hour prior to the performance. Discounted seats are available with the purchase of 5 or more tickets to any combination of performances in the School of Performing Arts 2013-14 season. The season includes the Visiting Artist Series, Ensemble Performance Series, and Mainstage Theatre productions. The final performance in the Mainstage Theatre Series is the musical "Spring Awakening" which runs April 13-27.
Squires Theatre is located in the Squires Student Center at 290 College Ave. on the campus of Virginia Tech. Free parking is available on weekends and after 5 p.m. weekdays in the Squires Lot, located at the corner of College Avenue and Otey Streets, in the Architecture Annex Lot on Otey Street, and the Perry Street/Prices Fork lots.
