Ron Gibbons, director of the Center for Infrastructure Based Safety Systems at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, has been named a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America based on his research related to transportation and lighting.

Lighting and visibility are critical to the safety of the motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists on roadways and in parking lots and garages. Gibbons conducts research in all of these venues. His studies also include the impact of headlamp design on safety, wet night visibility, and the use of adaptive lighting technologies, an approach to lighting that will allow the system to be adjusted based on need.

In addition to recognition of his research, which has resulted in numerous scientific publications on roadway lighting, photometry, and target visibility, the IES recognized Gibbons for "investigation of real-world behavior in measurable ways and promotion of the application of new research and knowledge in the field."

The award was presented at the IES annual conference in Minneapolis on Nov. 11-13.

Gibbons is a past president of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America. His Ph.D. is from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

IES is a non-profit learned society that was founded in New York City on Jan. 10, 1906. The IES's stated mission is to improve the lighted environment by bringing together those with lighting knowledge and by translating that knowledge into actions that benefit the public.
