Dean Rich Sorensen is retiring from his position as dean of the Pamplin College of Business after many years of service to the university.

As part of the interview and selection process for the next dean, Senior Vice President and Provost Mark McNamee invites all members of the campus community to meet the candidates selected for a campus interview. University and community members will be invited to attend each candidate’s open forum presentation on “The Vision for a Business College at a Large Public Comprehensive Land-Grant Research University.” A reception will be held following the open forum presentation.

Each candidate’s curriculum vitae and survey links to provide feedback will be posted on the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost website in advance of each visit date. The search committee encourages all campus and community members to submit feedback via the online surveys.

Arjang A. Assad, dean of the School of Management and professor of management science and systems at the University at Buffalo (State University of New York), will interview at the Northern Virginia Center on Monday Dec. 10, and will interview in Blacksburg Dec. 11 and 12.

  • Assad will present at an open forum on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Latham Ballroom B, The Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center, with a reception following from 4:30 to 5 p.m.

Assad joined the University at Buffalo as dean in August, 2008. He previously served in key administrative roles in the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, where he had also been a faculty member since 1978.  Assad brings a broad disciplinary focus, and highlights research interests in operations and quality management, optimization of distribution systems, mathematical programming and the history of operations research.

He received a Ph.D. in management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
