Penny Helms White has been appointed director of parent and alumni relations within the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech.

White, who has held the role of director of development for student affairs and parent support within University Development since 2009, will be responsible for leading, managing, and directing parent and alumni relations for the Division of Student Affairs. She will report to the vice president for student affairs.

“Penny White is perhaps the ideal person to come into this position,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Edward Spencer. “She will bring her years of experience in admissions and development and especially her most recent experience in fund-raising and friend-raising with parents, alumni, and others.”

Before coming to Virginia Tech, White served as assistant director of admissions, associate director of admissions, and director of special and annual giving at Radford University. She also received a bachelor’s degree in finance and an M.B.A. from Radford.

During her time with University Development at Virginia Tech, she spearheaded creation of the Division of Student Affairs Parent Committee, the division’s advisory board for former student leaders, and the alumni speakers panel.

“It is a great honor for me to have the opportunity to serve the parents and alumni of Virginia Tech in this new role,” White said. “Our parents and former student leaders are valued members of our university community and I look forward to developing programs to more actively engage them in the Division of Student Affairs.”
