Virginia Tech to host 10th anniversary remembrance ceremony for 9/11
Virginia Tech will host a brief remembrance ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11, to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks 10 years ago, as well as the military and public service personnel who strive to protect their communities every day.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to gather at the War Memorial at 12:30 p.m. to join in reflection on the event and how it continues to impact lives on a global and local scale.
Road closures will begin at 12:15 p.m. The area surrounding the ceremony site will be blocked off to the bookstore parking lot on Kent Street, Drillfield Drive at Eggleston Hall, and near Torgersen Bridge at Alumni Mall.
The program is expected to last 20 to 25 minutes with a schedule of speakers including university officials and student representatives. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets Color Guard will present the colors and the Gregory Guard, the Corps of Cadets rifle drill team, will perform a rifle salute. Buglers from the Highty-Tighties, the Regimental Band, will perform Echo Taps.
Patrons will also have a place to record their experiences related to the Sept. 11 events and to sign a reaffirmation of Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community, with hard copies provided as a keepsake.
Attendees can park along Drillfield Drive by Burruss Hall and by the residence halls, at the Architecture Annex off Otey Street across from the University Club, and the Squires Student Center lot off Otey Street. Parking will be unavailable on the eastern portion of the Drillfield.
