BLACKSBURG, Va., April 20, 2011 – Update: University President Charles W. Steger and Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech will be participating in the 2011 Earth Week/Arbor Day tree planting event in support of the campus community and the Earth Week activities that has been organized by the Environmental Coalition.
BLACKSBURG, Va., April 14, 2011 -- As part of Earth Week 2011, Virginia Tech students, employees, and members of the community are invited to take part in the planting of 25 native hardwood trees near Slusher Wing (north of Dietrick Dining Hall) on Thursday, April 21.
The tree-planting, to be held Thursday, April 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Participants can arrive any time during those hours. Tools will be provided and no experience is necessary.
Trees to be planted include Pin Oak, Tulip Poplar, Black Gum, Red Oak, and Sweet Gum.
The planting of the trees will help in the reforestation of a grassed slope which will reduce surface runoff, eliminate mowing, and provide shade while promoting Virginia Tech’s sustainability initiatives in the Climate Action Commitment.
In 2008, Virginia Tech was one of the first universities to be named an Arbor Day Foundation Tree Campus USA . Annual tree plantings are a component of the university’s yearly recertification as a Tree Campus USA.
