The Virginia Tech Police Department responded to an incident involving a man with a knife on Alumni Mall at 9:41 p.m. on March 25, 2011. Two witnesses reported observing an altercation between two male subjects. The altercation became physical and one of the suspects allegedly displayed a knife and threatened the victim. Officers, already in the area, responded to the location. 

Adam Emerson Rhein, 21, from Washington, Va., was taken into custody without incident and charged with felonious assault and appearing intoxicated in public. He was held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $2,500 secured bond and later released. Rhein is not a Virginia Tech student and no one was injured during the incident. 

The Virginia Tech Police Department would like to remind all community members of the following:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
  • Report all suspicious people and circumstances immediately.
