Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation hires director of Blacksburg operations

BLACKSBURG, Va., March 4, 2011 – The Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation has selected H. Bennett Teates of Blacksburg, Va., to be the executive director of its Blacksburg operations.
A native Virginian, Teates has more than 40 years experience working in the National Security arena. His experience includes serving in the Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, being a director of command and control programs at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, and serving as a program manager at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He founded and managed Command Control Inc. Tampa, Fla. and Atlanta, which did research and prototype development for the Department of Defense and the power industry. He sold the company after 13 years of growth and it is now part of General Dynamics.
Teates earned his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1964 and was also a distinguished military graduate. He holds advanced degrees from George Washington and Johns Hopkins Universities. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Blacksburg and the board of directors of the Northwest Montgomery Village Center Foundation.
The director of Blacksburg operations will report to Chief Executive Officer Thomas M. McNamara Jr. and will be responsible for establishing the headquarters of the Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation in Blacksburg.
The Virginia Tech Applied Research Corporation has been established to foster applied research, development, and management of large-scale contract research projects. It will extend the university’s fundamental research enterprise to applied, translational, and commercialization projects. The corporation operates in Blacksburg, Va., adjacent to campus, and in the National Capital Region with offices in the Virginia Tech Research Center – Arlington facility when it opens this spring.
