The Department of Recreational Sports at Virginia Tech is offering the new American Red Cross Guard Start training course.

The first Guard Start class, scheduled to begin July 6 at 9 a.m. in McComas Hall, gives youth ages 11 to 14, the confidence and expertise to become skilled future lifeguards. Guard Start teaches teens and pre-teens everything from lifesaving techniques to fitness and professional development. It will focus on key areas such as swimming skills and prevention of aquatic accidents.

“The goal is to get our youth ready for life saving situations,” said Whitney Evans, coordinator of Aquatics and Instructional Programs for Recreational Sports at Virginia Tech. “Participants learn what it takes to be a great lifeguard and gain skills to help them get ready to take a lifeguard training course.” More information and registration for the Guard Start course at Virginia Tech is available online. The Guard Start course is $75 and registration must be completed by July 1.
