John Jackson of Roanoke, Va., former online editor of Roanoke.com / The Roanoke Times, has been named director of web communications at Virginia Tech.

In this position, Jackson will be responsible for the management of all high-level public content, organization, and structure of the Virginia Tech website. He will oversee the web communications team in the Office of University Relations and will work closely with colleagues in the university’s information technology division to develop university-wide standards for Web content, management, and design.

Jackson was the online editor of The Roanoke Times website, Roanoke.com, since September 2005 where he supervised a team of seven to create, enhance, and maintain content on the website. He also was the online information technology manager in 2005 and the online production editor of Roanoke.com from 2003 to 2004.

From 2000 to 2003, Jackson was the editorial producer of Cars.com. He also was the associate editor and webmaster for the College of William and Mary Alumni Association and was a reporter for The Daily Advance in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Jackson received his bachelor’s degree from Radford University and a master’s degree from Northwestern University.
