Sharon M. Kurek, manager of controls and accountability at the University of California, Berkeley, has been named director of internal audit at Virginia Tech.

In her new position, Kurek will be responsible for developing and executing an annual and long-range audit plan for university programs and resources. She will supervise a team of auditors, review and approve the evaluation of internal controls and resulting recommendations, and provide updates of audit activities and recommendations to the Audit Committee of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

Kurek has worked at Berkeley since 2001, serving as manager of controls and accountability since 2006, and as a staff auditor, senior auditor, and principal auditor from 2001 to 2006. She also served as a staff auditor, advanced staff auditor, and principal auditor for the Georgia Department of Audits from 1998 to 2001.

She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Kurek received her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University.
