Speaker asks whether institutions can achieve diversity without giving preference to race, gender

Juan E. Gilbert of Auburn University, the developer of a data mining tool called Applications Quest, will visit Virginia Tech on Tuesday, April 22, to demonstrate how the tool works and lead a discussion on holistic approaches to achieving diversity in education.

His talk, “Achieving Diversity in the New Affirmative Action Era,” will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Brush Mountain Room A in Squires Student Center. It is part two of the Post-Michigan Series and is co-sponsored by the Office for Equal Opportunity, the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Center for Academic Enrichment and Excellence.

Gilbert’s tool allows the use of race/ethnicity, gender, or any other attributes to be considered in admissions, school assignments, employee hiring, or other application processing areas without preferences to race or gender.
