The Virginia Tech Department of Recreational Sports is hosting a Hokie Hope Health Fair and Race Expo on Friday, April 18, 2008 and a Hokie Hope 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 19, 2008.

The Hokie Hope Health Fair and Race Expo on Friday, April 18, 2008. This event is free and open to the public. Businesses, departments, and organizations are encouraged to participate by stationing an activity or giveaway booth free of charge. Sign-up forms are available on the recreational sports website. In addition, all University Bookstore Hokie Hope 5K Run/Walk participants are encouraged to pick up their race packets at this Expo prior to race day.

The University Bookstore-sponsored run/walk is in support of the American Cancer Society, and the Recreational Sports Expansion Initiative. All runners/walkers will have the opportunity to vote for an initiative at the Race Expo.

“We want to give everyone the chance to run in the memory of someone they love,” said Ali Arner, assistant director of fitness and assessment. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to use exercise to help motivate and inspire others.”

The 1-Mile Fun Run portion of the day’s events will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the 5K Run/Walk race at 10 a.m. The 5K will start at the Duck Pond by West Campus Drive. The race is open to both Virginia Tech patrons and the public.

Post-race with refreshments and entertainment tailgate will sponsored by the student-run television station at Virginia Tech, VTTV. The tailgate will feature door prizes, music, and an awards ceremony.

The University Bookstore and Volume Two Bookstore are Virginia Tech’s official on- and off-campus bookstores. Their sole purpose is to support Virginia Tech. In their 38 years of operation, they have transferred 100 percent of their surplus funds to Virginia Tech. This money is used for student-related purposes.

The Virginia Tech Recreational Sports Department joins in partnership with the university to enhance the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, their families, and the community by providing recreational and fitness opportunities throughout the year.
