The Association of College Unions International (ACUI) has announced Virginia Tech's Scott Reed as recipient of the 2007 C. Shaw Smith Award.

The honor was announced at the ACUI Region 5 conference in Charleston, S.C., Nov. 3 and 4.

As senior associate director of union operations and services, Reed is part of the University Unions and Student Activities (UUSA) management team that operates four Virginia Tech facilities totaling more than 350,000 square feet and oversees more than 400 student and professional staff. Squires Student Center, Johnston Student Center, the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown, and War Memorial Chapel are all UUSA facilities. University Unions and Student Activities, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs at Virginia Tech, complements the academic program by providing a variety of activities, educational opportunities, programs, facilities, and services that enhance student development and enrich the quality of campus life at Virginia Tech.

“We are very gratified that Scott’s dedication and hard work have been formally recognized by ACUI,” said Guy Sims, assistant vice president for student affairs. “The C. Shaw Smith award is especially appropriate to Scott’s years of service, focusing as it does on service to students and community in higher education.”

The C. Shaw Smith Award is named for C. Shaw Smith, first Union Director for Davidson College who held that post for more than 30 years. In a life dedicated to the profession of higher education, Dr. Smith also served as the Region 5 Coordinator twice and the ACUI National Director. His service to the students and community at Davidson and countless professionals through ACUI continues to be an inspiration, and his memory is honored through the annual award, presented to a recipient who embodies the spirit, professionalism, and dedication of C. Shaw Smith.

Reed has been a member of University Unions and Student Activities since 1993, first as recreation assistant manager, then as recreation manager, coordinator of leisure services, assistant director for leisure services and marketing, associate director of university unions, acting co-director for university unions, and his current position. During that time he has been an active participant in ACUI and ACUI Region 5, supporting the many programs ACUI offers its members in education, advocacy, and services.

Reed received his bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University and a master’s degree from James Madison University. In addition to his professional service, Reed is a volunteer with the American Red Cross and the First United Methodist Church of Salem.
