Engineering firm Stantec has donated $100,000 to provide scholarships for students in Virginia Tech's Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The Stantec Scholarship for Engineering Excellence establishes two $10,000 scholarships each year for the next five years for students pursuing degrees in the civil and environmental engineering fields.

“We have many Virginia Tech alumni at Stantec, including myself, who wanted to do something to show our continuing support of Virginia Tech and, in particular, the Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,” said Bill Edwards, Stantec vice president and leader of the company’s operations in the US Southeast. Edwards received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1966 and his master’s in sanitary engineering in 1968, both from Virginia Tech.

“This scholarship will help more Virginia Tech students reach their goal of becoming engineers while at the same time promoting the engineering profession,” Edwards said.

“The Via Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is extremely grateful to Stantec for its decision to invest in our students through the establishment of these scholarships over the next several years. Our students will benefit greatly from having such substantial scholarship funding available. Stantec has taken a bold step in this commitment towards the future," said William Knocke, the department head.

Stantec has four offices in Virginia, as well as numerous Virginia Tech alumni. The company established a $2,000 engineering scholarship at the university last year but has since committed to further extending its help to students as representatives of the engineering and Virginia Tech communities.
