Two Virginia Tech communications programs produced by the Office of University Relations were recently recognized with Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence national awards.

Among the awards received by Virginia Tech:

  • The university’s website received a Bronze Medal in the Complete Institutional Web Sites category. Forty-one entries in the category were judged; only three won medals. The web communications staff in University Relations developed the website – Michael Dame of Blacksburg, director; Bruce Harper of Blacksburg, webmaster; Elaine Oliver, former web developer; and Kimberly Haines of Roanoke, Va., web producer.
  • The Visual and Broadcast Communications unit received a Silver Medal in the Technology Innovations category. Paul Lancaster of Blacksburg and Gabrielle Minnich of Blacksburg were recognized for producing a variety of regular podcast programming which is available on the university's web site.


CASE is the largest international association of educational institutions and is dedicated to helping member institutions build stronger relationships with alumni and donors, raise funds for campus projects, produce recruitment materials, market their member institutions to prospective students, diversify the profession, and foster public support of education.

Circle of Excellence Awards recognize the highest caliber of work from across the United States and Canada. Qualified professionals from education and the private sector judge the categories. This year, 701 institutions submitted more than 3,163 entries in the Circle of Excellence awards program.
