Stephen E. Scheckler honored with emeritus status
Stephen E. Scheckler of Blacksburg, professor of biological sciences in College of Science at Virginia Tech, was conferred the "professor emeritus" title by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting August 27.
The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1977, Scheckler won several national and international awards for scholarship, including a Fulbright Fellowship in Belgium, a Bullard Fellowship at Harvard University, and was elected as a member of the Linnaean Society. He published regularly in peer reviewed literature and has written book chapters in textbooks and symposium volumes. He also received Certificates of Teaching Excellence from the College of Arts and Sciences and the university’s Xcaliber Award for course software development.
Scheckler received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
