Linda R. Bucy of Christiansburg, Va., has been named assistant vice president for sponsored programs administration at Virginia Tech, announced Robert Walters, vice president for research.

Bucy has been interim assistant vice president since December. Previously she was associate director of the Office of Sponsored Programs from October 2001 to February 2006. She then served as director of post awards, responsible for all post award and financial administration activities within the office.

"Virginia Tech researchers have enjoyed working with Linda in her leadership roles with sponsored programs for the past several years," said Walters "Her experience with the university, in addition to her professional skills, make her ideally suited for this position."

As assistant vice president, Bucy manages the Office of Sponsored Programs and is the official signature authority for all sponsored projects. She provides leadership to a professional staff responsible for both pre-award and post-award administration of all externally funded sponsored projects. She represents the university on research administration issues to federal, state, and local governments and external sponsors, and is the university contact for policies and procedures related to sponsored projects. Responsibilities also include establishing and revising policies and procedures as necessary to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and providing leadership and direction to research accounting information systems and sponsored programs electronic initiatives.

Before joining the Office of Sponsored Programs, Bucy was accounting manager with Virginia Tech's Controller’s Office and a member of the finance implementation team. She also worked with the Internal Audit Department from 1985 to 1996. Bucy is a certified public accountant and worked in public accounting for 11 years in Tennessee prior to coming to Virginia Tech.

Bucy earned a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Tennessee at Martin, in 1974, where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society. She was licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in Tennessee in 1976.

She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Tennessee State Society of Certified Public Accountants, National Council of University Research Administrators, Society of Research Administrators – Virginia Chapter, and Financial Officers of Colleges and Universities-State Supported (FOCUS). She has presented at national and state meetings on topics related to financial research administration and on the Banner system. She has presented training programs at Virginia Tech on research policies and sponsored accounting.

University service includes developing research priorities for SUNGARD SCT research modules, being a Best Practices Committee Member for Review of the Personnel Activity Report process, being the classified staff representative on the Athletic Committee, and a member of the Non-Revenue and Women’s Sports Study Committee.
