  <title>Virginia Bioinformatics Institute completes largest ever Affymetrix GeneChip plant experiment</title>

  <description>The Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech today announced that it has completed the largest ever Affymetrix GeneChip microarray study for a plant experimental system in an academic research setting. The 2600-chip experiment explores the counter-play of plant and pathogen genes during infection of soybean with the root-rot pathogen &lt;cite&gt;Phytophthora sojae&lt;/cite&gt;, with a focus on mechanisms of long-lasting disease resistance. &lt;cite&gt;P. sojae&lt;/cite&gt; causes severe damage in soybean crops and results in $100&#8211;200 million annually in losses for commercial farmers in the United States alone.</description>  <pubDate>Tue, 29 May 2007 00:00:00 -0400</pubDate>

  <description>Lisa Schweitzer, assistant professor of urban affairs and planning in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech, recently returned from the Roads and the Environment seminar, hosted by the International Road Federation in Geneva, Switzerland. Schweitzer served as a panelist at this meeting, which brought together specialists in sustainable development, urban planning, environment, road construction, infrastructure planning, science, and government to debate the influence of roads on the environment and to examine how to reduce harmful impacts. Policy makers and practitioners discussed and debated the transport sector, acknowledging the social role and environmental consequences of transport.
