Anita Haney of Blacksburg, college librarian for the humanities for University Libraries at Virginia Tech, was conferred the title, "assistant professor emerita" by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors during the board's quarterly meeting March 26.

The title of emeritus may be conferred on retired professors and associate professors, administrative officers, librarians, and exceptional staff members who have given exemplary service to the university and who are specially recommended to the board of visitors by Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board of visitors receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1969, Haney worked closely with faculty in English, history, philosophy, religion, theatre arts, and in French, German, and Spanish languages and literature to build and maintain strong library collections to support the faculty teaching and research needs.

Because of her strong language skills; deep knowledge of music, literature, and related disciplines; intellectual curiosity; personal approachability; and dedication to library service, Haney helped innumerable faculty track down obscure citation or documents, answer difficult questions, or acquire needed specialized materials.

She also led many general information skills sessions, giving hundreds of students a way to learn how to remain information literate.

Haney received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Master of Library Science degree from Queens College.

Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college, Virginia Tech is the most comprehensive university in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is among the top research universities in the nation. Today, Virginia Tech’s eight colleges are dedicated to quality, innovation, and results through teaching, research, and outreach activities.
