Nicholas W. Haus of Rice Lake, Wis., a senior majoring in crop and soil environmental sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, was awarded the university's Lt. Timothy Price Memorial Scholarship for his academic accomplishments and leadership in his Soil Survey and Taxonomy class. This is the second year the scholarship has been awarded.

John Galbraith, professor of crop and soil environmental sciences, established the scholarship to honor the memory of Lt. Timothy Price, a former student in his Soil Survey and Taxonomy class from Midlothian, Va. Price was killed in action in Iraq after voluntarily returning for a second tour of duty.

“Tim demonstrated strong leadership during class field trips and was a cheerful, responsible, and an enthusiastic student,” said Galbraith. “Nick Haus sets a good work ethic example for the rest of class, shares information with the class from his geology background, and has an enthusiastic attitude about learning that carries over to the other students. Tim tried to make the world a better place, believing strongly in the Virginia Tech motto Ut Prosim (That I May Serve). I know that Nick will do the same, and I know Tim would appreciate his attitude and self-motivation.”

Nationally ranked among the top research institutions of its kind, Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences focuses on the science and business of living systems through learning, discovery, and engagement. The college’s comprehensive curriculum gives more than 2,200 students in a dozen academic departments a balanced education that ranges from food and fiber production to economics to human health.
