Winners of the Second Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Poster and Essay Competition have been announced.

The purpose of the competition, which was open to students in Montgomery County, Radford City, Floyd County, Giles County and Pulaski County Public Schools, was to encourage students to think critically about Dr. King’s legacy of community and freedom. This year, 78 students entered the poster competition and 41 students entered the essay competition.

The competition was divided by grade level, with prizes of $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place.

The following students were named winners:

Poster Competition:

Grades K – 1:

1st place: Keith Grundahl, Belview, Montgomery

2nd place: Hulon Jenkins, Gilbert Linkous, Montgomery

3rd place: Zachary Meredith, Belview, Montgomery

Grade 2:

1st place: Thrasher Whitehurst, Falling Branch, Montgomery

2nd place: Jackson Packard, Kipps, Montgomery

3rd place: Dylan Moore, Falling Branch, Montgomery

Grades 3 – 4:

1st place: Vera Villanueva, Margaret Beeks, Montgomery

2nd place: Zach Shephard, Christiansburg, Montgomery

3rd place: Tiannah Blassinggame, Falling Branch, Montgomery

Grades 5 – 7:

1st place: Brandon Downey, Belle Heth, Radford

2nd place: Chelsie Fisher, Falling Branch, Montgomery

3rd place: Travis Carter, Belle Heth, Radford

Essay Competition:

Grade 7:

1st place: Moriah Carper, Dalton Intermediate, Radford

2nd place: Zeke Shaffer, Dalton Intermediate, Radford

3rd place: Nishant Grover, Dalton Intermediate, Radford

Grade 8:

1st place: Ashley Altis, Christiansburg Middle, Montgomery

2nd place: Sara Lane, Christiansburg Middle, Montgomery

3rd place: Chelsea Hodges, Christiansburg Middle, Montgomery
