University Core Curriculum renamed to Curriculum for Liberal Education

Virginia Tech has changed the name of what was formerly known as its "Core Curriculum" to the "Curriculum for Liberal Education" in order to better reflect the actual purpose and scope of the curriculum and to afford students with expanded opportunities to more closely integrate their general and liberal education into their major fields of study.

The change, which took effect in the Fall 2006 semester in the form of Policy Memorandum No. 240, was approved based on a resolution recommended by the University Council on Recommendation of the University Core Curriculum Committee and endorsed by the Commission on Undergraduate Studies and Policies. The adopted resolution also changes the name of the "University Core Curriculum Committee" to the "University Curriculum Committee for Liberal Education."
