Virginia Tech raised $75.3 million during the 2005-06 fiscal year, the second highest private giving total ever at the university.

In a remarkably strong showing, alumni contributed $32 million of that total, accounting for just over 43 percent of all private giving to the university. That number marks a dramatic rise from last year, when such giving made up just over one-third of private support.

The surge in alumni giving was one of the highlights in another strong fundraising year at the university. In addition to the increase in alumni support, giving by Virginia Tech parents rose by nearly 25 percent, and unrestricted giving – funds that can be used to address the university’s most pressing needs – was up 37 percent. Virginia Tech’s colleges saw a 16 percent revenue increase over the previous fiscal year, and two colleges, the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, saw their highest private giving totals on record.

Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college, Virginia Tech is the most comprehensive university in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is among the top research universities in the nation. Today, Virginia Tech’s eight colleges are dedicated to quality, innovation, and results through teaching, research, and outreach activities.
