Students donate more than $10K to Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program

Virginia Tech’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity and the Office of Student Programs joined forces for the Flex-Out Hunger campaign and donated more than $10,000 to the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program.

For the fifth consecutive year, students donated $10,117.52 in extra money on their meal plans to the MCEAP, an organization that assists members of the local community who, for reasons beyond their control, are unable to provide for themselves. The MCEAP provides food, clothing, furniture, and financial assistance for utilities. Every dollar collected during the Flex Out Hunger campaign goes toward gift certificates to local grocery stores. The MCEAP distributes these gift certificates.

The more than $10,000 is up from last year's $8,159.92. “We are very pleased to see that the amount of donation to MCEAP increased this year by nearly $2,000," said Rick Johnson, director of housing and dining services at Virginia Tech. "This is a tribute to the SAE fraternity’s hard work, and the generous spirit of Virginia Tech students.”

Donations were accepted on campus at West End Market, Dietrick Dining Center, Owens Food Court, Hokie Grill & Co., and Squires Food Court.
