Monday, Sept. 20th at 8:00 p.m. in the Squires Recital Salon at Virginia Tech, guest artist Katrina Zook, mezzo-soprano, and faculty pianist Tracy Cowden will present a recital of opera and art song repertoire.

The recital will feature arrangements of Dutch, English and American folk songs, arias by Scarlatti, Bizet and Weill, and art songs by Debussy and Marx.

Zook serves as Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Wyoming, and Cowden joins the Music Department at Virginia Tech this fall as assistant professor of piano and vocal coach. Both artists received doctoral degrees from the Eastman School of Music, and they have continued to collaborate in performance since their time in school together, including recitals in Wyoming, Colorado and upcoming engagements in Ohio and at the Music Teachers National Association Conference in Seattle, Washington.

Zook's operatic performance credits include leading roles in Le Nozze di Figaro, Cos" fan tutte, Hansel and Gretel, Carmen, Dialogues of the Carmelites, The Old Maid and the Thief, Die Fledermaus, Albert Herring and Amahl and the Night Visitors. Zook was engaged for three seasons as the resident alto soloist for the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, and has several major cantata and oratorio roles to her credit.

As a collaborative pianist, Cowden has performed in recitals with principal musicians from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This past spring, she joined the Cavani Quartet for a performance of Schumann's Piano Quintet at the Spring Chamber Music Festival in Delaware, Ohio, and she will return to central Ohio in March for a performance of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.

All tickets are $5 and are available only at the door. For more information, contact the music department at (540) 231-5685 or the School of the Arts at (540) 231-5200. For more information on other School of the Arts events, visit the website at http://www.sota.vt.edu/.
